High School football is in full swing!!!!
Perhaps the most challenging HS Sport to shoot. Poor lighting on cold nights trying to get 500 shutter speed at ISO 2500 is a a challenge. The last 2 years I have mounted a SB 800 20 inches below lens on a home made bracket attached to my mono pod . This approach get s light up into the helmets and helps reduce red eye( or Demon eye)
I set SB 800 to manual 1/3 step below 1/2 power
ISO 500-800 SS 250 and F 2.8-F 4
Here are a few shots using my setup

pretty neat setup, although I am kind of surprised that they will allow you to use a flash, most of the time the bright light of the flash on a dark night is enough to distract the player, but each sport is different. Nice shots.
High School football fields are dungeons to shoot on--Flash is the only real way to catch action after the sun goes down
I have used this set up for 3 years never have I had a complaint
Just use some judgment -I have passed on many a shot because I was afraid Flash may interfere with a receiver
Most players I have talked to don't even notice the Flash-
Now Volleyball in my area does not allow Flash Basket ball I set up 3 on one end Bounced off ceiling and controlled by remotes
